I am back here with another late post. Let’s go back 8 months in time. The reason of this trip is Aarhus. One of my friends from Bilgi University went to Aarhus for the Erasmus exchange year. And I have this huge admiration for a Danish singer, whom I bought tickets for twice and yet the shows got cancelled. Fallulah, I wouldn’t say most people know about her but I would highly suggest you to listen her. For example this one. Anyways, when I saw that she will have a show in Aarhus, where my friend applied for an Erasmus exchange, I bought my tickets right away. Both my plane tickets from London and the show tickets. I just could’t risk to miss this opportunity.

It was one of my best trips honestly. Well okay I always feel the same about my trips. I am always exited I am always happy about them. But there was something special about this one. I will be seeing close friends after not seeing them for 3 months, I will finally see Fallulah my Danish love and Denmark…..

Let’s dive in to what we feel about Denmark first. When you say Denmark, they say “expensive” It is inevitable. And I can now say from experience yes it is an expensive country. Luckily, we did not pay for accommodation, we stayed with Doga in her dorm room. But when I say dorm, don’t imagine the school ones. This one was quite impressive, it wasn’t like a dorm dorm. It was more like a shared apartment complex.

So what I have done in Aarhus, what can I recommend you:

Cafè Drudenfuss

This is the place we met for our first dinner, first meal together. It is a burger place, and they do have huge American size burgers and fries. If you are vegetarian like me I would recommend the vegan burger, it was delicious. The atmosphere is really cute, there will be people studying or having a tiny work meeting around you while you are having your lunch/dinner with friends.

Aros Aarhus Art Museum

This is a World famous modern art museum. There are 4+1 levels, where the top floor is a panoramic terrace. Most of the time, they have separate exhibitions on each level. From what I have learned, there is an open bar on the top floor where the terrace is, where you can sit have a drink enjoy some rare sunny moments in Aarhus. Watching the sunset from the panoramic terrace is an once in a lifetime experience. With every glass being a different color the sunset changes according to it. It is like having a filter while watching the sunset.  On your way out, I would recommend you stop by the museum shop where you can also find Scandinavian products.

Friday Bars

This is a really peculiar subject to explain. So according to the Danish tradition/culture, every Friday the schools turn their departments into theme bars. So what does this mean? The departments in the schools such as business faculty, engineering faculty they turn their home rooms into bars where they provide alcohol, games and decorations. One of the best ones are the Theology Faculty and the Dentistry, at least they were the best while I was there. These Friday bars are the cheapest place where you can get alcohol in Aarhus. And the parties go till morning, you can change in between the faculties, I would highly suggest these.

Latin Quarter

I believe the Latin quarters always have a lot to offer. There are so many cute cafes, so many tiny, amazingly creative boutiques, you just cannot get enough. But after walking around for ten times, you will need a cafe and for that I would recommend you “La Cabra” It has an amazingly cute atmosphere inside. People working studying around you. The desserts are so delicious.

If you are a bit hungry or you came around to the Latin Quarter on the morning, I would highly suggest “Cafe Englen“, and if the weather is good meaning if you were lucky, you can eat your breakfast or snacks outside under the sun on the beautiful street.

Street Food

Imagine a huge warehouse, the only thing you can see from outside is the name “street food” and the smells coming from inside. Ah the food! It was amazing, pure joy! You can find almost any kind of cuisine inside, from Mexican to Greek. The atmosphere again really cute and welcoming. You mostly share your table with some other people which makes the whole experience even better. Must eat here before leaving Aarhus.

Marselisborg Dyrehave

One of the best thing about Aarhus is that you can have the city life but you can also enjoy some nature. This place is a tiny heaven, a scene from the Snow White, it is just unbelievable. So many deer around you, and they are not scared, if you stand still they will come to you. You can feed them with carrots and bread. But please bear in my mind that this is their natural habitat meaning you have to be respectful. You can follow the path, or you can also kind of get lost in the forest avoiding the restricted areas. This could be a nice Sunday experience in Aarhus.

Some other tips for Aarhus visitors: 

• The weather changes all the time. You can witness a small snow storm followed by a sunny day. So come prepared be ready to have 4 seasons in one day.
• I wouldn’t suggest the weekend public transportation cards, most of the places are reachable by foot.
• Don’t forget to taste some smørrebrød!
• Bring a refillable water bottle – The tap water in Denmark, as in all of Scandinavia, is perfectly drinkable. In fact, tap water in Denmark is often cleaner than bottled water!
