Bu yazıyı hangi açıdan yazsam diye çok düşündüm. Hatta şu an bunu yazarken bile hala düşünüyorum. Sizler için açıklayıcı, yol gösterici bir yolculuk yazısı olarak mı? Yoksa biraz daha kişisel, hatıra gibisinden mi yazsam diye? Ama baktım karar vermesi çok zor, ikisini aynı anda yapmaya karar verdim. O zaman başlayalım hadi!

I thought about how to write this posts, which angle to use, from where to start. I am actually still thinking while writing this down. I wasn’t sure if I wanted it to be a pure information post, or share my personal feelings and stories as well like a diary from the trip… Well it is hard to choose, so here comes both mixed. Let’s start

Peki neden İrlanda? Ve neden araba yolculuğu? Sorularına açıklık getirmek istiyorum. Bu senenin başında, yanlış hatırlamıyorsam Ocak’ın sonlarına doğru İrlanda-Dublin için, St. Patrick’s Day biletlerimizi aldık arkadaşlarla. Soylemeden gecmiyim biraz gec kalmisiz, cogu guzel airbnb coktan tutulmustu. Ama fark ettik ki hepimiz aslında gerçekten İrlanda’yı daha yakından ve detaylıca şehir şehir görmek istiyoruz. Dedik o zaman hadi bir araba yolculuğu yapalım ve İrlanda’yı keşfedelim. Sonra fark ettik ki Game of Thrones’un çekildiği yer de Belfast’te yani Kuzey İrlanda’da. Dedik ee hadi onu da ekleyelim. Sonuç olarak 6 günlük bir plan ortaya çıkardık. Arabayı neden tercih ettik? Çünkü 3 kişiyiz, 3 kişi toplu taşımaya otobüse falan filan vereceğimiz parayla çok rahat bir şekilde otomatik, klimalı bir araba kiralayabiliyorduk. Açıkçası araba ile daha eğlenceli olacağını düşündük gezinin.

Why Ireland? Why road trip? Let’s start with these 2 questions. If I don’t remember it wrong we bought our St. Patrick’s Day for Dublin in the beginning of January, which was kind of late to be honest. Most of the good Airbnbs were booked already. With this we realised we all actually want to see Ireland as a whole, to travel between the cities and enjoy the country. Then we said ok let’s plan a road trip then. We are all huge fans of Game of Thrones you see, so we found one of the biggest filming scenes which was in Belfast in Northern Ireland. So, we added that on the list as well. At the end it was a 6 days trip. Another question why travel by car? Well we are 3 people, it would be hard to travel by bus, train etc. And also car was cheaper for what it was offering. Plus road trips are fun!!!

Now let’s talk about what to do, where to see and small tips:

1. İlk olarak kalacak yerden bahsetmek istiyorum. Şimdi tek başına ya da 2 kişi olarak seyahat ettiğiniz zaman, eğer couchsurfing’e pek sıcak bakmıyorsanız hosteller mükemmel secim oluyor. Ama eğer 3 kişiyseniz, ki biz 3 kişiydik Arinbnb gerçekten çok mantıklı. Genellikle totalde daha ucuz bir seçenek oluyor. İlk gece 1 günlüğüne, sadece 2 kişi olduğumuzdan Generator Hostel’de kaldık. Ama ondan sonraki günlerimizi farklı şehirlerde, farklı Airbnbler’de geçirdik.

First of all let me tell you about where to stay. When you travel solo or as a duo, couchsurfing is a good idea but if it is not for you then hostels are the perfect option. And if you are 3 which we were airbnb was cheaper than the hostel prices for 3. It also depend how long you are staying at the places of course.

2. Araba ile seyahat etmeyi düşünenler için, öncelikle eğer 25 yaşının altındaysanız, sadece 5 yıllık bir ehliyete sahipseniz araç kiralamanıza izin veriyorlar. Tabi bu biz Türkiye vatandaşları için pek mümkün değil. Çünkü bizler ehliyetlerimizi 16 yaşında almıyoruz. 5 yıllık ehliyetinizin yanında günlük ekstra bir 30 Euro sigorta parası ödüyorsunuz. Biz aracı Sixt’ten kiraladık. Arguscarhire sitesini kullandık. Teknik başka bir bilgi ise, yollar şahsen Türkiye’deki otobanlara ve normal yollara göre çok daha dar. Ayrıca çoğu şehirden şehire geçebilmek için önce Dublin’e uğramanız gerekiyor. Çünkü otobanlar Dublin’in dışındaki bir yuvarlak hat ile birbirine bağlanıyor. Ve bu hatları kullanmadan ulaşım çok zor. İrlanda fazla dağlık taşlık çünkü.

Second of all, if you are considering of traveling by a car, heads up if you are under 25 you have to have your license at least for 4 years, which only possible for Americans I believe. So you need to be older than 25 to rent cars and even then there is an insurance fee(30 €). We rented the car from Sixt, since we all knew about the company it kind of felt like a safe option. And we used Arguscarhire web-site to rent it from Sixt. Bad news, the roads are super tiny, most of the time there is only one line so you kind of have to share it. Also to move between the cities most of the time you have to drive through Dublin, because the mountains, landscape doesn’t allow otherwise.

3.Cliffs of Moher; Galway’den yaklaşık 2 saat mesafede. Ancak gitmeden, hatta gidilecek günü planlamadan önce hava durumunu kontrol edin. Bazen fazla sisten dolayı hiçbir şey göremiyorsunuz. Şahsen bizim basımıza bu geldi. Biz direk 1 günümüzü ayırdığımız için hava durumuna odaklanamadık. Gittiğimizde full sis vardı. Oraya gidişimiz bile problemli geçti bu sisten dolayı. Eğer ki Galway’den gidiyorsanız, yol üzerinde durmanızı önereceğim 2 durak var. Bunlardan ilki Poulnabrone Dolmen, Tas Devri’nden kalmış kocaman bir mezar. Kocaman taşlardan masa şeklinde görülmeye değer. Bir diğeri ise Doolin Mağarası, içeride Kuzey Yarımküre’nin en büyük sarkıtlarını görebilirsiniz. Bunların dışında zaten yolda giderken etrafınızda gördüğünüz yeşilliğe ormanlara taşlara her şeye hayran kalacaksınız. Hele ki Cliffs of Moher’e tırmanırken çok güzel manzaralara tanıklık edeceksiniz.

Cliffs of Moher; approximately 2 hours of driving from Galway. But PLEASE check the weather before planning your visit. Sometimes due the foggy weather you see almost nothing. Which happened to us. And since we already planned everything we couldn’t come back again. But good news is that they allow you to re-use the ticket if there is such situation. It was also a bit tricky driving up there.If you are driving from Galway like we did, I have 2 recommendations for you. First one is Poulnabrone Dolmen, second one Doolin Caves. Other than these, the roads are amazing, tiny yet do green. You will see some of the best landscapes ever, and so many sheeps probably.

4.Galway’de The Spanish Arch’i görmeyi unutmayın. Hemen o bölge, yani Latin Quarter diye gecen bölgede, The Front Door Pub’da yemek yemenizi öneririm. Kocaman bir bar ve restoran. Lokal tatları da bulabilirsiniz. Çoğu gece de yöresel müzikler çalan gruplar oluyor sahnede. Tig Choili, yine aynı cadde üzerinde biraz daha ileride yöresel bir Pub, öğrendiğimize göre genelde çok kalabalık olan bir Pub, her gece canlı yöresel müzik var ve Irish Pub’ın en güzel örneklerinden.

Don’t forget to visit The Spanish Arch in Galway. Which is just next to the Latin Quarter, amazing area. There is a famous place there called The Front Door Pub. I will suggest this one for dinner, you can also find local cuisine as well. Most of the night they have traditional bands playing. But my favourite was this tiny place called Tig Choili, which is few meters from the pub. One of the most authentic tiny Irish Pubs I have ever seen. Mostly super crowded hard to get in but nice atmosphere and music.

5.Belfast’e geçmeyi düşünenlere önerim, tam sınır yazısını görünce durup fotoğraf çekilmeleri. Biz gece geçtiğimiz için oldukça zorlandık. Araçların geçmesini bekledik tabelanın ışıkla aydınlanması için. Ama mükemmel bir fotoğrafı ve anı kazandik bu sayede.

For those who also want to pass to Belfast, keep your eyes open while driving for the border sign. There is no border control or anything but you might be able stop the car and take a photo. We had to wait a bit for the cars to pass and give us some flash light for the photo. But pretty fun memory!

6.Game of Thrones Westeros, yani Castle Ward-National Trust, Belfast’ten 20-25 dk mesafede. Online olarak ödeme yapip paketler arasından seçerek kendinizi bir günlüğüne Game of Thrones dunyasina ait hissedebilirsiniz. Buradan book edebilirsiniz.

7.Bu önerim biraz daha film tutkunlarına olacak. P.S. I Love You filminin cekildigi bar Dublin’de, adi Whelans. İçeride Hilary Swank ve Gerard Butler’ın imzasının olduğu bir film afişi de var. Geceleri open-mic oluyor ve çok kaliteli müzisyenleri dinleme şansı yakalıyorsunuz.

This recommendation is for movie lovers. The bar they filmed P.S. I Love you is in Dublin, a pub called Whelans. They even have a signed poster of Hilary Swank and Gerard Butler on the wall. They have open-mics some nights, it is a small pub but fun.

8.Dublin’de bir gecenizi aksam yemeği de dahil olmak üzere, Temple Bar bölgesinde geçirmenizi öneririm. Dublin’in en hareketli bölgesi. Yemek icin onerecegim yerde Bad Ass Cafe, bar yemekleri var genelde ama patates kizartmalari cok guzel. Birbirinden güzel bar ve clubların olduğu aynı zamanda da çok güzel restoranların olduğu mükemmel bir bölge. Şahsen biz en çok Fitzsimons Temple Bar’da eğlendik.

I would highly recommend you spend one night around Temple Bar, you can have dinner here as well. A suggested place would be Bad Ass Cafe. It is mostly bar food but the french fries are goooood. The whole are is amazing filled with bars and cafes. One of my favourites Fitzsimons Temple Bar.

9.Wicklow’a yolunuz düşerse kesinlikle Powerscourt’a bir uğrayın derim. Kocaman bir otel ve park alanı aslında. İçeride gezebileceğiniz çok güzel bir park/bahçe var. Aynı zamanda hafta sonu kahvaltıları çok lezzetli ve bir sürü farklı seçeneğiniz var. Şahsen favorim meyveli scone.

If you pass by Wicklow by any chance Powerscourt is your stop. It is an enormous hotel actually. They have a lovely garden you can visit quite big as well. The weekend brunch is amazing, you can find almost anything there. My favourite is the fruit scone.

10.Iranda deyince çoğumuzun aklına bira, ve bira denilince de Guinness geliyor. Dublin’deki fabrikayı görmelisiniz. Mükemmel bir deneyim. Biranın nasıl yapıldığından, Guinness’in geçmişine kadar türlü şeyleri öğrenebilirsiniz. Tabi bedava Guinness’i de unutmamak lazım.

Well when we say Ireland beer is a common word that comes on our mind. And Guinness more specifically. I would suggest you to visit the factory which is in central Dublin. You can get the historical information as well as an amazing journey through the levels. Don’t forget your free Guinness at the end, or should I say the top.

11.Trinity College’i de unutmayalım. Tur veren öğrenciler yardımıyla okulu gezip tarihi hakkında daha fazla bilgi edinip, arkasından da Book of Kells ve meşhur kütüphaneyi gezebilirsiniz. Yine film severlere yönelik olarak, The Man Who Knew Infinity bu okulda çekildi.

Let’s not forget about the Trinity College. You can sign up for a tour, which are mostly given by the students which is even more amazing. You can also see the Book of Kells after the tour. For the movie lovers, The Man Who Knew Infinity was filmed here.
